No more Discount from Verizon Renewals

Today marks a tragedy for Americas' most reliable mobile network. Verizon has officially confirmed the discontinuation of their 2-year contract renewal discount. Starting January 16, 2011, Verizon customers will no longer get ANY discount on phones. Ever since Verizon Wireless was created, any new customer would receive a large discount on their phone when they would sign or renew a 2 year contract with the company. The discount brought phone prices down several hundred dollars, but not anymore. If you needed a replacement phone before your contract was up, you had to pay the full price of the phone. Now you will have to pay the full price for any phone, no matter what.

With Verizon's recent announcement of the iPhone coming to their network, predicted numbers of over 100 million new customers surfaced the web. The iPhone would've been around $100.00 after the 2 year contract discount, but now speculations price the newly anticipated phone to be three times that. Even cheap replacement phones that used to be affordable will now cost you an arm and leg.

Verizon had been keeping this discontinuation a secret for quite some time, but was officially confirmed yesterday, and will become in affect starting tomorrow.

Verizon knows that they lead the mobile market with the best service, but this new policy could cause an outrage to the companies downfall. They are the first to eliminate signup and renewal perks for mobile phones, but customers may soon flee to other providers due to the drastic increase in the device pricing. Other networks such as At&t have been planning to update their service coverage for years, which may lead to a great alternative for Verizon customers.

Verizon has also announced an increased fee for smart phones that will be running on their new 4G network. Last year Verizon changed their path to influence the use of internet on almost all of their phones. Basically any phone that had a camera would be required to pay an additional $10.00 per month fee that would allow limited internet access to all phones, unless you got a basic flip phone with hardly any features. The unlimited data plan currently costs $30.00 a month for all advanced 3G smart phones, but with Verizon's new 4G network, any phone with 4G capabilities will be required to pay an additional $10.00 for the advanced 4G network.

4G is somewhat faster than 3G, but the coverage is only about 10% in the United States. If you have a 4G compatible phone, you will be paying additional money for the faster network, but most likely won't ever have access to 4G, instead your 4G phone will be running on 3G while you pay more for a faster network.

This is just another complaint fired up by Verizon customers that could very easily lead to Verizon Wireless's downfall. After a rough few years for their customers being introduced to increased charges, this may draw the lines for those who have put up with these rediculous charges.

Verizon recently introduced their restocking fee of $30.00. The restock fee was charged if you had purchased a phone within the last month and wanted to return it for a new phone. If your phone broke due to technological failure, you still had to pay the restocking fee to return the broken phone that you recently bough, which broke due to the manufacturer. This fee enraged numerous customers with dissatisfaction of Verizon's customer support.

Early last year a lawsuit was filed against Verizon for a large number of faulty charges to nearly 70% of customers bills over the years. Verizon was "unknowingly" billing their customers for "purchases" that their customers had made. The problem with these charges was that the customer had no idea what these charges were and had never purchased or subscribed to these services. Verizon was in theory making money by adding small charges to customers bills. Since not everyone overlooks their bill each month, many people had no idea they were being charged for additional "purchased" items that they never had access to.

I have been a Verizon customer for over 10 years and I have probably been falsely charged over $300.00 from these hidden charges. I disabled all features on my phone that would ever allow me to be charged for purchases made, but I continued to be charged. I could not access the marketplace from my phone after I disabled it, but every month I would have several charges for things that I supposably "purchased" from the marketplace, which was not possible for me to do. I would call Verizon and complain, which would result in them reversing the charge, but the next bill would come in with more charges I never made. I was being charged $3.00 a month for ringback tones, but I never purchased ringback tone services and demanded Verizon to stop billing me for these fraudulent charges. The last few years I have received a few of these charges occasionally, but the rate at which I receive them has finally started slowing down.

Not only have I experienced Verizon's fraud charges personally, but it has made headline news on Yahoo before. I found out about the lawsuit against these faulty charges when I saw it in the top news feed on Yahoo. I don't get how a multi billion dollar company can continue to get away with these fraudulent charges. My brother continues to get charged $9.99 every month for a dating service that he supposably "subscribed" to, but never did. On the bill, the dating service has an undercover name that isn't even related to a dating service. After continually calling Verizon for removal of the charge, they told him that it was for a dating service that he had signed up for, but he had no idea what they they were talking about.

Verizon is a shady company and must be watched over so that you don't get falsely charged. My family and several friends are all seriously considering switching mobile providers after all of these shady and selfish acts made by Verizon Wireless.

If you have any questions or have stories of your own false charges, please leave a comment! Thanks.

Sorry, I was just expressing my opinions towards the companies past and my predictions of their status in the future.

I've had Verizon for 7 years and never had a problem until I switched to the droid x a couple of months ago. I've had it replaced over 5 times already for malfunctioning. I try pleading with them telling them I don't want it it doesn't work. They say sorry we can give you another. Certified like new...yea that's a joke those phones are not like new one bit I e blown threw 3 of those already. 2 almost caught on fire by getting so hot when I wasn't even on it. Verizon doesn't care about their customers just their money. Now no 2yr discount I will not return to Verizon when my contract is up.

I have the exact same problem with Verizon. I have been with them for 6yrs. Starting 3yrs ago I have had to call them every month to see if I am being charged anything extra on my bill. Just about every month they have been more than willing to reverse extra charges that shouldn’t have been there in the first place. I just recently found out that Verizon had been charging me 9.99 per month for this website bidding service which I ‘supposedly’ signed up for since December 2010. I told the representative that I didn’t sign up for anything like that, especially since I never have heard of the company name before. This third party bidding service charged Verizon to charge me. Corruption and fraudulent charges made to go directly to my acct. Verizon informed me that this was a third party service and that there would be no way of reversing the charges because this company didn’t charge me but charged them. I had to argue over and over until I finally spoke with a representative that was able to reverse the fee. Verizon reversed only one month worth of fees.
