FCC plans to Regulate the World Wide Web

The United States of America is known for taking on global challenges, but their new plan could end up devastating the US economy even more. For some reason, the US feels the need to step in on every conflict from wars that end with the military pulling out, to the new battle for the Federal Communications Commission wanting to regulate the WORLD WIDE WEB.

On December 21, 2010 the FCC approved its plan to regulate the internet with a 3/2 vote. The new regulation was originally planned to eliminate costly broadband service providers, but the plan could end up hurting provider investments. The new plan sets rules that denies the right for broadband providers to block websites and discriminate how they treat web traffic. The FCC is trying to get online service providers, like Netflix, to charge higher fees for users that take advantage of services. With websites like Netflix, the FCC is saying that they should charge more for the users that watch a large number of movies and TV shows.

The FCC also wants to put ratings on websites to regulate the type of content that particular websites offer. The ratings is somewhat of a good idea, but these are already controlled by individuals network security settings. They say their plan will help producers earn profits and decline the amount of people making illegal downloads. The FCC plans to become more strict on the regulations in the upcoming years to stop the spread of confidential information like the recent Wikileaks scandal. Republicans are warning the FCC that their regulations imposes unnecessary rules that hurts the few growing industries in the current economy. This regulation is causing companies to put their network upgrading on halt for fear of no longer earning a profit with the upgrades.

Companies like Netflix, Skype, and Amazon are all against this new regulation along with a majority of the Republican party. Now that the Republicans rule the majority of the house, they may try to overturn this new regulation that the FCC has placed on one of the most publicly free sources. This plan was originally designed to eliminate spam, fraud, and protected information.

Instead of the US government trying to take away rights guaranteed in the constitution, maybe they should work on their own security to stop their classified information being released to the public. The internet allows for people to express what they want and provide it how they choose. If people get ahold of government files there is obviously a problem with the governments security, not the internet. The new regulation is absurd and takes away from the people rights. The US has no right to control a worldwide showcase of individual rights and the way they are expressed. I am certain that there will be huge complaints with this plan and it could possibly cause the economy to fall even more than it already has in the past few years.
