Texting Faster - New technology by Swype

Remember when texting fist came out? Probably not, but for those of you who are texting veterans, you remember in the 90’s when only ABC was used to type messages. Most people now use T9, word, or a QWERTY keyboard to type out messages much faster than ABC ever would be. ABC texting is considered the stone age of modern texting. Cliff Kushler invented T9 years ago, which made a revolutionary change in the way we communicate. Just about everyone texts on a daily basis, even my friends grandparents text! The wide spread use of texting started when Kushler released T9. It made it much faster to be able to communicate with others, without having to call someone or press 13 buttons to simply say, “hello.”

It’s been several years since the release of T9 and the use of QWERTY keyboards, but Kushler is at it again! Since most phones now are either all touchscreen, or mostly touchscreen, T9 has become a secondary texting method, while QWERTY keyboards have take over as primary. Kushler noticed that typing on a touch QWERTY keyboard causes multiple common “typo’s” per text. Mr Cliff Kushler has invented the next method of texting, called Swype.

Swype reinvents the way QWERTY is used. The new software allows you to glide your finger across the keyboard, rather than having to press each letter. Most smartphones now have features that autcomplete words, adds punctuations, and corrects typo’s, but Swype aims for the next level.

“We’ve squeezed the desktop computer, complete with keyboard and mouse, into something that fits in a pocket. The information bandwidth has become very constricted,” Said Kushler. “I thought, if we can find a better way to input that information, it could be something that would really take off.”

Swype’s software detects where a finger pauses and changes direction as it traces the patter of the word. As your finger moves, it draws a line in the path at which your finger created. Precision doesn’t matter because the software calculates which words a user is most likely trying to spell. With the software detecting the motion of your finger, you may think it would be hard to spell a word that contains a double letter. Capitalization and double letters can be indicated by either squiggling on the letter or pausing your finger on the letter. Swype claims that their software improves message pace by 20 to 30 percent. There is no doubt that people will be using Swype in the near future.

Swype is already being used on seven smartphones in the United States, which includes the HTC HD2 and the Samsung Omnia II. By the end of this year, the Swype software will be on more than 50 models worldwide.

Swype generates money by charging phone makers a licensing fee for each device sold. There is also a high potential of Swype selling add-ons, which include custom dictionaries and remote controls. Apple is known for their iPhones and keeping screts, but Swype claims to be making its software available for iPhones too.

Although Swype seems like a rare and unique feature, it has some competition. After Kusher sold T9 to AOL, T9 was later sold to Nuance. Nuance is know for speech recognition software, but have also been working on a sliding text feature called T9 trace. T9 trace started when Nuance acquired a startup called ShapeWriter, where they reworked it to compete with Swype.

Kushler says that Swype is a big breakthrough and could reach billions of people. T9 has been put on over 4Billion devices, making Kushler capable of success again. In 1999, T9 was sold to AOL for $350 Million. Could Kushler change texting once again? It is very possible, Swype is already being a huge sucess.

Also thought I would mention SlideIT, which is a replacement keyboard similar to Swype and is available already for Windows Mobile Symbian and Android as a free trial and a paid app.

Hmm thats interesting. That sounds pretty neat, ill have to check it out. Thanks! Yahoo also wrote an article about 5 Disappointments about the new iPhone. One of those five is no "Swype" texting or improved texting from a basic touchscreen keyboard. Very interesting stuff.
