iPhone and iPod Touch Jailbreaking Guide

Jailbreaking iPhones and iPod touches has never before been easier! Black Ra1n was released quite awhile ago, and continues to be the leading tool for jailbreaking the devices. This hub is going to be broken down into 3 simple parts for readers to be able to easily understand the concept and process of unlocking your iPhone or iPod touch.

Part 1: What is jailbreaking?

Part 2: How do i Jailbreak my device?

Part 3: What do i do after my device is unlocked? (Jailbroken)

Part 1: Jailbreaking or Unlocking, is just a term used to describe a hacked and modded firmware for the iPhone and iPod touch. By jailbreaking your device, you can install third party applications made by developers that haven't submitted their apps to the official iTunes app store. Most of these third part apps allow customization that is not possible with the ordinary firmware. You can completely customize the look and feel of your device, totally free. The main reason people jailbreak their devices is to use customized themes, such as changing the batter icons, wallpaper behind your apps, app icons, dock, lock screen, and many other things. There really is not a limit to the amount you can do with the unlocked devices. You can also get almost any app from the appstore for free by unlocking your device. This method is free, safe, and legal.

Part 2: This is going to be a tutorial broken down into steps to easily jailbreak your device.

Please note that doing this jailbreak WILL NOT restore your device. You WILL NOT lose any content.

1. Start off by going to http://www.blackra1n.com and clicking either the windows or mac logo (Depending on your operating system). This will download the Black Ra1n software used to jailbreak iPhones and iPod touches.

2. After you have downloaded the Black Ra1n software, plug in your device if not already plugged in.

3. This is where the magic happens. Open up Black Ra1n. A small box will show up that simply says "Make it Rain." All you have to do is click the button.

4. Your device will show the "Plug in to restore" screen on the display. This is completely fine, and it WILL NOT restore your device. iTunes will pop up and say that it has detected your device in recovery mode. Do not click anything yet.

5. Your device will soon show the Black Ra1n logo on the display. This means that it is currently installing the Black Ra1n package on your device. After showing the logo for a short time, you will see a series of code run down your display.

6. Your computer will now have a pop up that confirms that you have successfully jailbroken your device. DO NOT click ok until your device appears normal (Usually the lock screen will be shown).

7. Once your device appears to be in the normal state, you can click the "OK" button on both Black Ra1n and itunes. You have successfully unlocked your device!

8. Your device will now how a Black Ra1n app installed on it. Simply click on it. It will show 3 different things you can install: Cydia, Rock, and Icy. You can install all of them if you want, but i only recommend installing Cydia.

9. After you have installed Cydia, and/or the other apps, go to the bottom of the Black Ra1n app and click edit > delete.

10. Your device is now ready to be used in an unlocked manor. Go to part 3 to learn more about what to do after your device is jailbroken.

Part 3:

Now that your device is unlocked, you can now install third party applications. Cydia is basically like the app store, except it contains apps made for jailbroken devices, and apps that are not found in the app store. Like I said earlier, the things you can do are near endless, so in this part i'll just give a short overview of the easy and popular things to do with your jailbroken device.

The most popular thing to do with your jailbroken device in my opinion is adding themes. Cydia does a nice job at setting this up. Open up Cydia and click on the "sections" tab at the bottom of the app. Slide on down to where it says themes. You'll notice many different themes categories. The most popular category is the "SpringBoard" or "SB" themes. The SpringBoard is what controls the Graphical interface of your device. So go ahead and find a theme that sounds appealing, click on it, confirm and download the theme. Once downloaded, open up the app called "WinterBoard" or if you have the latest version of Black Ra1n, you can access it through settings. Then click on themes.vWinterBoard keeps track of all your themes and SB Addons in order from the most recently downloaded. All you have to do is click on the theme you want to show. After you selected the settings of what you want, just hit the home button on your device. You will see the spinning loading icon dimmed in the middle of your device. It takes a few seconds to load, then it will either go into sleep mode, or the lock screen. Just slide to unlock, and your theme will appear! There are thousands of themes available, swell as SpringBoard addons that allow you to customize the appearance even further.

I would strongly recommend going through Cydia's sections, and look for apps and tools that sound appealing to you. There are so many things you can add, it comes down to what you want to add or change to your device.

Some apps require you to add repositories (Repo's) to have the app available to download. To add a repo, simply open cydia and click on the "manage button at the bottom of the app. Then click on "sources." Then click edit > add. You can enter any repp you have come across. Usually there is a subdomain containing "repo" or "cydia" so you know its not an actual website. Example: cydia.iphonecake.com. Repo's are just another name for sources. By adding repos, it allows you to add other apps and utilities available for download in Cydia.

You will soon notice that deleting apps downloaded from Cydia isn't as easy as deleting apps that you have downloaded from the app store. To delete something that you have downloaded through Cydia, simply open Cydia, and click the "manage" button at the bottom of the app. Then press "Packages." This will display everything that you have downloaded from Cydia. Slide to the name of the app or package that you want to uninstall, press it, then press "modify" at the top right of the app, then select "remove." This completely removes the app or utility that you have installed.

The last main thing you need to know is the Cydia updates. Similar to when you have updates for apps downloaded from the app store. You will see a circle with a number of updates. Getting updates is highly recommended because the more updates building up slows down your device. When you open Cydia, it will ask you if you want to install the updates. You can also pick which updates you want, or manually update all manually by opening Cydia and pressing the "changes" button at the bottom of the app. Then simply click "upgrade" or "update."

That concludes the quick guide to jailbreaking and using your jailbroken iPod or iPhone. If you have any question, feel free to contact us. Check back for more modding guides and tech news!
