F.E.A.R. 2 Review

In February 2009, the highly anticipated sequel to the original F.E.A.R. game was released. For the gamers that are not so familiar with F.E.A.R, it stands for "First Encounter Assault Recon," but there is no doubt that you will feel the FEAR in the game.

I have played more games than I can remember, including all genres, but F.E.A.R 2 I must say is by far the scariest game I have ever played. Not only does the campaign storyline take place in creepy buildings and locations, but the whole game is basically played in the dark, with your flashlight turned on at all times. Throughout the game, you encounter paranormal activity visuals and sounds. Your original task is to find out what happened to the kidnapping of a women, but you end up trying to figure out how to lose the spirits following you. F.E.A.R. 2 doesn't only keep you on your toes with paranormal figures appearing randomly, but the scenery and violence associated with torture of a variety of people, gives you the feel of a cruel environment.

The levels that you will encounter in the storyline fits the FEAR in the game. Without giving away spoilers to the storyline, I will tell you that it is like being in a scary movie. I'm a huge fan of scary movies, but this game might just top and horror film created.

Aside from the paranormal and human aspects of the game, there is the occasional "Living Dead" enemy that appears to be a zombie. These living dead characters appear to be a regular human, but once encountered, they have red leashes dangling from them as they chase you and attempt to kill you. The zombies summon more dead from the ground, so make sure you kill them all as fast as you can.

Plot Review

Like I noted earlier, I'll try not to spoil the storyline. The story starts off with you trying to resolve the kidnapping of a women by visiting her residency and place of work. You'll soon find out that the team behind the disappearance is actually an advanced military army. Wondering through offices, warehouses, hideouts, schools, and hospitals that have been completely destroyed keeps you on your toes with every turn in the dark. The details that went into each level is impressive and gives you that abandoned feel.

Playing the whole game in the dark take awhile to get used to, but the overall darkness makes the game unique and horrifying. Occasionally your flashlight will dim or go completely out, making you wonder in pure darkness with the occasional emergency light flashing in the distance.

Paranormal Twist

My favorite part about this game is the paranormal activity going on in the background. You never know when you're going to turn the corner and see a creepy blur of a little girl stand, running, or coming at you. You'll randomly see ghostly figures appear with horrifying sound effects, then vanish into the air.

You're sometimes given a warning when a paranormal figure is about to appear with a reddish tint on the screen and it seems like your character is in a daze. The rest remains a mystery, so be prepared when you turn corners and open doors!
