Apple Announces 4.0 OS

Firmware 4.0 Quick Run About

On April 8, 2010 apple's CEO Steve Jobs unveiled plans for the next edition in the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad firmwares. Thats right, 4.0 is officially an item! Steve Jobs released and even demoed some of the new features coming along with the new operating system. Apple has said that the new firmware, 4.0, will include over 100 new user features. Also with this new OS comes a new SDK for app developers, featuring over 1500 new API's to make more powerful and exiting apps. This new firmware will be released in the summer of 2010 for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and in the fall for the tablet - iPad.

Like 2.0's addition with the app store, which was an idea available from the iPhone and iPod touch's jailbreak, the new 4.0 OS will have features that have come from jailbreaking and unlocking your devices. Thats right, the new OS will allow you to change the look and feel of your device, similar to themes from Cydia. Cydia is the jailbroken center for apps and utilities. You will be able to set background images behind your apps, instead of a black screen! Also currently available from Cydia, you will be able to add folders to your device to help organize categories of your apps.

Another anticipated feature coming with the 4.0 OS, is the addition of multitasking. Multitasking will allow you do run several apps at the same time. All you will have to do is double tap the home screen, and a dock-like menu will appear with all your current apps that are being ran. Multitasking will allow you to easily pause a game or app, and locate to another app, or continue running another app. Apps such as last.FM and pandora, will be able to run and play music while you are using other apps. This feature is included with the new API's, which means that its the developers job to include this multitasking feature.

With the arrival of the iPad and OS 4.0, the iBookstore will be added to the apple devices. iBooks is exactly what it sounds like. It is simply a bookstore that will allow you to download full books to be read from your device.

Along with the new OS, it is said that the mail app will be pretty much recreated with many enhancing features. You will be able to view mail from all your email accounts, instead of having to sign out and switch email accounts. You will also be able to organize messages by threads and open attachments in third party apps.

This new firmware will also include iPhone only features, such as zooming for the camera, search contacts, and a rework of your contacts to make it easier to add information about your contacts.

There are many other features being added with the new OS, such as iAd, which will be an all new mobile advertising program from apple, receiving billions of ad impressions and rich media ads daily. 4.0 will also offer more useful features to businesses.

The only major turnoffs for the much anticipated 4.0 firmware is that Steve Jobs simply responded "no" with the comment on the inclusion of a flash player. Also, the new OS will not be supported by all of apple's mobile devices. The OS will be fully compatible, including the multitasking feature, with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second/third generation iPod touches that have a 32GB or 64GB HDD from late 2009. The older generation the device is, the less features it will have. Apple hasn't said anything about features, if any, for the first generation iPod touches and iPhones. Apple also has not stated whether or not the new OS will be free, or for purchase such as the previous 2.0 and 3.0 releases.
